چکیده
Abstract Understanding the interplay of seismic and aseismic slip is key in hazard evaluation. It particularly important to know if same or nearby fault segments can host different modes understand transition between slip. We investigate this trifurcation area Anza segment San Jacinto where deep creep driving seismicity below geodetic locking depth has been proposed. focus on periods following local moderate‐sized earthquakes by combining occurrence highly correlated families (i.e., closely spaced partially overlapping events) that we describe here as near‐repeating earthquakes, seismicity, borehole strainmeter data. find all M w > 4.5 2010 2020 triggered afterslip with coplanar off‐fault microseismicity. These observations include newly detected June 10, 2016 5.2 April 4, 4.9 earthquakes. Afterslip geometries defined earthquake are consistent strain change observations. conclude similar low‐frequency within tremor, be useful indicators transients reveal faulting complexities during Further, identify first evidence spontaneous region from two minor faults 2015. Taken together, our support a model microseismicity located transitional at bottom seismogenic zone spatially heterogeneous frictional properties produce frequent near Anza.

Locally and remotely triggered aseismic slip on the central San Jacinto Fault near Anza, CA, from joint inversion of seismicity and strainmeter data
We study deep aseismic slip along the central section of the San Jacinto Fault, near the Anza Seismic Gap, in southern California. Elevated strain-rates following the remote Mw7.2 April 4, 2010 El Mayor-Cucapah and the local Mw5.4, July 7, 2010 Collins Valley earthquakes were recorded by Plate Boundary Observatory borehole strain-meters near Anza, and were accompanied by vigorous aftershock seq...
متن کاملQuaternary landscape evolution in the San Jacinto fault zone, Peninsular Ranges of Southern California: Transient response to strike-slip fault initiation
Well-constrained case studies of transient landscape response to external forcing are needed to improve our understanding of erosion processes in tectonically active mountain belts. The Peninsular Ranges portion of the San Jacinto fault zone (SJFZ) is an excellent location for such a study because it displays pronounced geomorphic disequilibrium resulting from initiation of a major strike-slip ...
متن کاملA Re-examination of Historic Earthquakes in the San Jacinto Fault Zone, California
The high level of seismic activity and the potential for large earthquakes in the San Jacinto fault zone, southern California, make it desirable to have accurate locations and source parameters for as many previous events as possible. Prior to the installation of a dense seismic network in this region, earthquakes were located using only a few stations with generally poor azimuthal coverage res...
متن کاملJacinto Fault Zone and Adjacent Faults, Southern California: Implications for Seismic Hazard
The southern San Jacinto fault zone is characterized by high seismicity and a complex fault pattern that offers an excellent setting for investigating interactions between distinct fatfits. This fault zone is roughly outlined by two subparallel master fault strands, the Coyote Creek and Clark-San Felipe Hills faults, that are located 2 to 10 km apart and are intersected by a series of secondary...
متن کاملAbundant off-fault seismicity and orthogonal structures in the San Jacinto fault zone
The trifurcation area of the San Jacinto fault zone has produced more than 10% of all earthquakes in southern California since 2000, including the June 2016 Mw (moment magnitude) 5.2 Borrego Springs earthquake. In this area, the fault splits into three subparallel strands and is associated with broad VP /VS anomalies. We synthesize spatiotemporal properties of historical background seismicity a...
